Your Internet Job Search

The internet is a relatively recent addition to the job search process...most actively in the past five years.  A survey by Robert Half International recently found that hiring managers receive 56% of resumes electronically, a 22% increase over 2000.

Job boards certainly need to be a part of your job search strategy; however, you need to spend only a proportionate amount of your job search time on them...lets say no more than 20%.  Monster.com and Careerbuilder.com are the major job boards.  If you have your resume on these two job boards, your resume will be available to most all medium and large sized companies.

Corporate subscriptions to these job boards are expensive.  If you are targeting smaller companies, they are not going to be able to afford the subscription costs to post their jobs or view your resume on these two job boards.  Also, small recruiting companies that place a lot of people also cannot afford these two job boards.

Therefore, I recommend that you post your resume on secondary job boards that are more affordable to smaller companies and headhunters.  There are well over 100 of these on the internet.

The true value of the internet for job seekers is in research.  You can find out valuable information on your target companies and corresponding hiring managers.  It's information that you need to determine if your target company is right for you; and it's information that you will need for your job interviews.

Here are some valuable internet sites and job boards that you may not know about.  If you find others that should be included in this list please email me with the website name and a brief description:

  • www.linkedin.com - This website is unique.

LinkedIn is an online network of more than 6 million experienced professionals from around the world, representing 130 industries.

When you join, you create a profile that summarizes your professional accomplishments. Your profile helps you find and be found by former colleagues, clients, and partners. You can add more connections by inviting trusted contacts to join LinkedIn and connect to you.

I would be happy to send you an invitation to this site.  By accepting my invitation, you will have access to my extended network of people.  The value of this network to your job search is in finding hiring managers within your target companies.  For example, if your are looking for the names of managers in the IT department of The Limited (for example), just do a simple search and find these hiring managers by name and title.

Just join this site.  The rest will become very obvious.

Nick Corcodilos gives us some great advice on the job search process, particularly in working with headhunters.
